At a glance
- Typical lifespan: about 10β15 years, often shorter in extreme-heat climates
- R-22 systems: R-22 production ended in 2020, so repairs that need refrigerant get expensive
- Best practice: replace the outdoor unit and indoor coil as a matched system

Signs it's time to replace your AC
- The system is 10β15+ years old.
- It needs a major repair, such as a compressor or coil, or keeps breaking down.
- It uses R-22 refrigerant (common in systems installed before about 2010).
- Your electric bills keep climbing even though usage hasn't changed.
- Some rooms never get comfortable, or the house feels humid.
- It can't keep the house cool on the hottest afternoons (see AC not cooling below 78Β°F).
The repair-vs-replace math
A widely used rule of thumb: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. If the number is above about $5,000, replacement usually makes more financial sense. Also consider energy savings. A new system that meets current SEER2 standards can use noticeably less electricity than a 15-year-old unit, which adds up when the AC runs most of the year.
