Common AC problems in Laredo homes
Laredo summers regularly push past 100Β°F, so air conditioners here run longer and harder than in most of the country. That heat wears out certain parts faster. The repairs Laredo homeowners ask about most often include:
- Failed capacitor: the outdoor fan or compressor hums but won't start. Capacitors are one of the most common summer failures.
- Bad contactor: the thermostat calls for cooling but the outdoor unit never kicks on.
- Frozen evaporator coil: ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines, usually from low airflow (dirty filter) or low refrigerant.
- Refrigerant leak: the system runs but the air isn't cold. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up"; if it's low, there's a leak that should be found and repaired.
- Clogged condensate drain: water near the indoor unit, or a safety float switch that shuts the system off.
- Dirty outdoor coil: dust, cottonwood and grass clippings block airflow and make the system struggle in peak heat.
- Thermostat problems: dead batteries, wrong settings or a failed thermostat.
What to check before you call
A few safe checks can save you a service call:
- Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and below room temperature, and replace the batteries if it has them.
- Check your air filter. A clogged filter is one of the top causes of poor cooling and frozen coils.
- Check the breakers for the indoor and outdoor units, and the disconnect box next to the outdoor unit.
- Look at the outdoor unit. If the fan isn't spinning while the system is on, turn the system off and call; running it that way can damage the compressor.
- If you see ice, turn cooling off and run the fan only to thaw it before a technician checks it.
Don't add refrigerant yourself. Handling refrigerant requires EPA Section 608 certification, and topping off without fixing the leak just delays the repair. For step-by-step troubleshooting, read our guide on AC blowing warm air.

Repair or replace?
If your system is more than 10β15 years old, uses the phased-out refrigerant R-22, or needs a major repair such as a compressor or coil, ask the contractor to price both a repair and a replacement so you can compare. A common rule of thumb: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. If the result is over about $5,000, replacement is often the better value. See AC replacement in Laredo and our AC replacement cost guide.
Questions to ask any AC repair contractor
- What is your TDLR license number? (You can verify it on the TDLR license search.)
- Is there a diagnostic or service-call fee, and does it apply toward the repair?
- Can I get the price in writing before you start?
- What warranty comes with the parts and labor?
Laredo AC Pros is an HVAC referral service, not an HVAC contractor. We connect customers with independent air conditioning contractors licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), including our current partner Twins Air Conditioning (TDLR #TACLA015293E). All HVAC work is performed, priced and warrantied by the contractor. Laredo AC Pros may receive a referral fee from contractors.
